 TAI CHI ORIGINAL

This group has continued for nine years, originally being lead by Sheila Jones, who taught us the 24 Forms over the first three to four years. We have since then been perfecting the movements and teaching new recruits to the group at the same time.  Sheila eventually gave up running the group and this position was taken over by Caroline Butter, with Pat Smith helping.

We have recently – February 2009 – begun to seriously convert the style of Tai Chi followed from that originally taught us to that taught by Dr Paul Lam, which is slightly more complex. It will keep us on our toes and prevent complacency setting in.

Membership has changed since the beginning, with only four of us (including Sheila) remaining from the original twelve. We now have a membership of fourteen - the maximum number that can work in the space available. Recruiting has never been a problem and, although we have never been able to say publicly that we had a vacancy, whenever one has arisen it has been promptly filled by someone who was waiting, or some one who came along at the opportune moment.

The group organisation is shared between Caroline Butter and Brenda Blunt, Caroline providing the lead in the performance, ably assisted by Pat Smith, and Brenda managing the collection of our hall hire and register.

We currently enjoy the hospitality of the British Legion at the Frazer Hall, meeting on Friday mornings at 10.45 a.m. for a start to the proceedings at 11.00a.m. After an hour’s work we have a coffee and enjoy a companionable natter before going our separate ways.

TAI CHI BEGINNERS

The Beginners Group was started in May 2005, as an overflow from the original Group, as we had received so much interest in Tai Chi and could not accommodate any more recruits. The group started with 10 beginners and one from the original group, who felt she would benefit from extra tuition. From the original 10 members only two remain. The group has settled down very well with members joining and leaving, as it does not suit everyone. I like to keep the class at around 12 members, and requests to join have usually exceeded vacancies.

The teaching follows the same criteria as the original group, so that members can move between the two groups. We are all working very hard on Dr. Paul Lam's 24 Form, and Caroline and I feel it gives the classes focus  and stimulation, as our Tai Chi has now been going for 9 years.

This group meets at the Catholic Hall each lesson, on a Monday afternoon at 2.30 PM for one enjoyable hour.
